Advising Information

Pre-Social Work Majors

As a Pre-Social Work major, our responsibility to you is to provide help, encouragement and information that will enable you to achieve your academic goal of a BA in Social Work. We use several approaches to get vital information to you:

One is this web site where there is helpful information on course planning (see the BASW Roadmap to Graduation), admissions, BASW curriculum and the field placement requirement.
Another is through mandatory quarterly advising after you reach junior status (90 to 134.9 units). Students must contact the department each quarter to make sure they are on the right track toward graduation. Course registration may be blocked if students overlook their advising sessions.
BASW Admission Information Sessions are held each quarter to give students helpful information about the BASW program and to answer questions. (See the admissions page for dates and times)
Advisors are available to meet with students on Tuesdays on a walk-in basis or any other time by appointment. We suggest you make an appointment after you have used the tools listed above.

Additional advising tips:

Declared Pre Social Work majors should refer to their PAWS report to determine what courses are needed.

While completing the B.A.S.W. program prerequisites, work on finishing the CSUSB general education requirements, as well.

Always plan ahead and call the appropriate departments to find out when courses will be offered.

BASW Majors:

You will be assigned a faculty advisor who will check your progress in the program quarterly and be available for career advising.

BASW applicants are required to submit two-year course plans as part of the application process. In addition, the department mandates quarterly advising for all BASW students to make sure they remain on track for graduation. As a result, registration blocks are placed on all the social work courses each quarter. The blocks are released after students notify their advisors of their course plan for the quarter.
