National Association of Social Workers (NASW)

  Students are encouraged to join and become active in our profession’s primary association, NASW. Membership applications are available from the Department of Social Work. Not only do students enjoy a substantially reduced dues rate, but also become eligible for a reduced transition dues rate upon graduation.

Benefits of membership in NASW include:

  • Reasonably priced liability insurance (required of all students enrolled in MSW field practica;
  • NASW News, a monthly, national newspaper;
  • Social Work, a bimonthly professional journal;
  • Reduced rates on other NASW journals;
  • Access to conferences and continuing education programs; and
  • Opportunities for professional development locally and at the state level.

Our local unit of NASW, convened by Dr. McCaslin of our own faculty, meets regularly to hear informative speakers, discuss current professional issues, and enjoy the company of colleagues. Students are welcomed at these meetings which provide an excellent means of increasing your own professional network. For more information, you may contact Dr. McCaslin by email at rmmcasli@csusb.edu.

Social Work Student Association (SWSA)

All MSW students are automatically members of the Social Work Student Association (SWSA) and are encouraged to become actively involved. SWSA is an organization that served to represent student interests and opinions in departmental policy making processes, to facilitate communication between students and faculty, to sponsor events that facilitate networking and cohesion among students, and to foster linkages with other student organizations on campus. Meetings are scheduled to accommodate all students and to encourage input from all students.

Each year, representatives are elected from each class to further communication between all students and the association. Student members for M.S.W. Curriculum Committees are also selected through SWSA. SWSA officers are elected annually.

SWSA can refer new students to continuing students for support, advice, and general encouragement. Please visit the new SWSA website at http://www.socalworkstudentassociation.org-a.googlepages.com/home.

To view or print the SWSA Newsletter , you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader loaded on your computer. If you do not, you may go to the Adobe Acrobat Web Site to download the application. View the current SWSA Newsletter

Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)

The Council on Social Work Education is a national association recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting body for social work education in the United States.  Although each BSW and MSW program may set its own unique focus and curriculum specializations, it does so within the policy and program standards set by CSWE.  Programs such as this, which have been accredited by CSWE, are reviewed regularly and have met a series of rigorous standards to ensure that students are adequately prepared for professional practice.  Your chances of being licensed or hired as a social worker are greatly enhanced by an accredited social work degree.

The Council has many publications, special projects and fellowships, and an Annual Program Meeting (APM) which functions as a professional conference.  The APM is also a forum for prospective students and faculty to network with educators and practitioners from all over the country.

For additional information on the Council on Social Work Education, you may contact them at 1600 Duke Street, Suite 300, Alexandria, Virginia 22314 USA, or call (703)683-8080, or visit their CSWE website.
