The start of the 2009/2010 academic year brought many changes to the CSUSB School of Social Work. Dr. Teresa Morris agreed to become the campus project director for a multi-million dollar longitudinal study, the National Children's Study. To fulfill her new role, she relinquished her duties as Director of the School. Dr. Laurie Smith was selected as the new Director of the School of Social Work. Dr. Carolyn McAllister was selected to become the Director of the BASW Program.

This year we were the recipients of a generous award from Catholic Charities San Bernardino/Riverside to establish the Catholic Charities Non Profit Fellowship Program to encourage BASW and MSW students to enter the non-profit sector and thus increase the capacity of the non-profit sector in the Inland area. The scholarships will support an average of two BASW and MSW students over several years and will cover half of their tuition. Students selected for the fellowship will demonstrate interest in a career in local not for profit service organizations in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

The BASW program will be reviewed for re-accreditation by CSWE in the latter half of the academic year. We believe the program is strong and look forward to a review that will result in reaffirmation.

The School of Social Work is affected, like the rest of the CSU system, by the unprecedented cuts to higher education. Faculty and staff are on mandated furloughs this year equaling two days per month. While no courses have been cancelled, there are mandated days that the campus is closed this year. Thus, although we continue to make student education our number one priority, there may be longer wait times for some services.
